A tornado caused damage in New Port Richey, Florida on May 31, 2022, but thankfully no one was hurt. There was damage to homes, vehicles, downed trees, and debris tossed throughout the area. Residents watched the funnel clouds appear before their eyes. According to WFLA.com, one resident said she watched the funnel cloud form, but then shortly after she ran inside and hid in the bathroom. “It just started taking things from the ground and turning it around, turn it, spinning it, winds started forming and debris started flying, everything started flying,” she said.

Wind and debris being thrown against roofs and tornadic-wind-driven hail can cause great damage to roof tiles and shingles. It is imperative to have a roof inspection after an incident like this, to avoid water seepage under tiles and shingles due to cracked, chipped, or sheared-off tiles or shingles. Early in April, La Belle, Florida had a hail storm, dropping golf-ball-sized stones, RestoreMaster aided in the aftermath of that with roof inspections and insurance claim reporting.

The local hail and tornado map indicates the path of the tornado (black), in the southeast area of the hail storm, which dropped up to 1” hail (yellow).

It is imperative to deal with roof damage immediately, with emergency coverage either shrink wrapping or tarping, in order to prevent water damage from future rain storms. RestoreMaster has experts in the area who are working to provide emergency solutions.

Some roofing systems can be severely harmed by damage from heavy winds, tornadoes, or hail.

Older roofs are susceptible to severe wind damage, by winds as low as 50 mph.

Several factors will determine the severity of roof damage: the height of the building and proximity to nearby structures, the quality of work by the original installers, the shape and angle of the roof, the age and type of roofing materials, and the impact from debris.

Following severe weather like this, it’s important to get a thorough roof inspection & property damage assessment to determine whether or not you have roof damage from hail or wind.

In situations where you’ve got a leaking roof, experienced disaster roofing contractors can stop the leaks temporarily, by laying tarp or by using a durable shrink-wrap plastic membrane in the affected areas, or even over the entire roof. This will keep your building protected until permanent repairs can take place. This will help prevent mold infestation from water leaks.

Get your roof inspected, even if you think there is no problem, especially if your property falls anywhere within the area of the hail and wind damage map.

Many storm damage symptoms are not always evident immediately.

And insurance company deadlines could hinder your ability to file a claim later.
