Local ABC 7 News affiliate predicted “Level 3 Enhanced Risk” weather during the early evening and worsening overnight in the Amarillo, Texas, area.

“These will be supercell thunderstorms (rotating storms) that will be capable of producing giant hail near the size of baseballs in the most robust storms. Winds gusting over 75 mph and a few tornadoes are also possible, so make sure you are staying weather aware as we head into the afternoon,” ABC 7 News reported during the run-up to the storm.

A local hailstorm damage map shows upwards of a dozen fast-moving storms heading in a northeasterly direction across Amarillo, the Texas Panhandle, crossing the state line into Oklahoma. The yellow area on the periphery of each front indicates hail up to 1.25 inches in diameter, peppering Texas counties including Carson, Potter, Hutchinson, Sherman, Gray, Wheeler, Randall, Armstrong, and Swisher. Oklahoma Panhandle counties of Cimarron, Texas, and Beaver also took icefall. The light orange portions of the storms suggest ice up to 1.75 inches in diameter, pelting neighborhoods and commercial districts. The darker orange shows hailstones up to 2.5 inches, inflicting significant property damage.
