Aug 2, 2022

Property owners in Olney, IL, and the Richland County area were reeling from hail strikes, high winds, and torrential downpours after an intense storm front pounded buildings on Monday, August 1st. Prompt emergency roof repair is needed in the aftermath of the storm and commercial roof inspection services are essential to fast-track insurance claims for roof hail and wind damage. RestoreMaster has a local office that performs roof repair in Chicago, Illinois and to all areas in and around Olney.

“Richland County and several other southeastern Illinois counties continue to feel the effects of Monday night's storms. Damaging winds, large hail, and flooding have wreaked havoc on Richland County. The storm brought down trees and power lines in the city, leaving a huge mess to be cleaned up. Many trees were snapped in half at Olney City Park. A tree also fell on a home on Sycamore Street. Luckily, no one was injured,” WTHI-TV 10 reported. “Ameren has been continuously working to restore power to the community. The northern part of Richland County has experienced flooding, causing several roads to be closed. Around ten roads in Olney remain closed due to downed trees and power lines.”

Commercial property owners are urged to request a complimentary roof inspection. Hail roof damage typically leaves cracks in shingles, panels, and sealants that allow rain to penetrate and water damage to impact rafters and load-bearing walls. Given the amount of rainfall that accompanied the Monday, August 1st, hailstorm, undetected roof damage will lead to costly restoration construction unless corrected.

A local hailstorm damage map stretches from south of Parkersburg, across Olney, and north of West Liberty. The yellow sections show that ice balls up to 1.25 inches pelted automobiles and rooftops. The light orange section surrounding Olney highlights icefall up to 1.75 inches blanketing the area. But the dark orange swath indicates hail strikes as large as 2.5 inches in diameter pummeled roofs causing major roof hail damage in Olney.

The National Weather Service tornado, high wind, and hail damage map for Monday, August 1st, shows concentrated storm fronts in southeast Illinois trailing into Western Kentucky, dense severe weather in Indiana, with isolated events across the county. All told, one tornado, 85 high winds, and 25 hail storms were reported over 24 hours. News and social media reports show that Richland and abutting counties suffered among the worst property and roof damage.

  • Berryville: High winds uprooted and snapped trees 3-feet thick as flash floods made roadways treacherous.
  • Bone Gap: Areas of Edwards County took ice fall the size of quarters.
  • Calhoun: The Richland County community sustained hailstone hits the size of quarters.
  • Dundas: Reports on social media show hail the size of half dollars impacted rooftops.
  • Flora: Fierce winds downed trees and a light pole at the baseball field. Heavy rains reached 3 inches.
  • Keensburg: Wabash County sustained icefall with the largest stones reaching 1.5 inches in diameter.
  • Newton: In Jasper County, golf ball-sized hail cracked roof shingles and sealants
  • Olney: Residential neighborhoods and business districts took repeated hailstone strikes, with the largest exceeding the size of limes. A mature tree near Carle Richland Memorial Hospital was reportedly toppled by strong wind gusts.
  • Sumner: The Lawrence County municipality was pelted by ice the size of quarters.
  • West Liberty: Roofs and outbuildings sustained damage from hail the size of ping pong balls.

The heavy rains following the hailstorm damage to roofs open the door to long-term damage to buildings. Scheduling a commercial roof inspection can identify difficult-to-detect damage that warrants repair. RestoreMaster conducted commercial roof inspections in Chicago, to help property owners expedite insurance claims after a storm hit on June 13, 2022.

Severe storms, bringing hail, strong winds, or tornadoes can cause severe roof damage, by ripping off roofing systems.

Some older roofs can sustain damage from only 50 mph winds.

The severity of roof damage depends on several factors including: type and age of roofing materials, presence of flying debris, roof shape and angle, building height and proximity to adjacent structures and the quality of original roof installation.

It’s important to get a thorough roof inspection & property damage assessment following severe weather like this so that you can determine whether you have roof damage from hail or high winds.

Circumstances do not always allow for immediate repair of roof leaks. In the meantime, an experienced disaster roofing contractor can cover the roof or affected area with a tarp or with a durable plastic shrink wrap material, until such a time when more permanent repairs can be made. We need to stop more moisture damage, so we can prevent mold growth.

Get your roof inspected, even if you think there is no problem, especially if your property falls anywhere within the area of the hail and wind damage map.

Some storm damage problems do not produce symptoms right away.

And deadlines from insurance companies could hinder you from filing a claim later.
