Contractor Responds to Roof Wind Damage in Saint Paul, MN After August 27, 2022 Tornados Rips Through Region
Commercial Roofing & Restoration
Five confirmed tornados tore through Minnesota on Saturday, August 27th, wreaking destruction in St. Paul and neighboring communities. RestoreMaster dispatched emergency roof repair technicians to Ramsey County to help secure leaks and prevent water damage. Impacted commercial property owners are urged to request a complimentary roof inspection to help fast-track insurance claims and resume operations.
“A tornado in Ramsey County had a rating of EF0, with estimated peak winds of 75 mph. NWS meteorologists calculated that it traveled for 3.4 miles, with a path that took it from southeast I-94 and Highway 10, through the Eastview neighborhood in St. Paul, close to Harding High School, before it ended near the Goodrich Golf Course,” Fox 9 reported. “Four additional EF-0 tornadoes briefly touched down in Burnsville, Apple Valley, Eagan, and West St. Paul in Dakota County earlier Saturday before the storm crossed the river into Ramsey County. Observed wind speeds in Dakota County ranged from 75 to 85 mph.”
It's crucial for building owners and property managers to schedule a commercial roof inspection when a tornado treks through the region. Twisters are typically accompanied by powerful straight-line winds and driving rains, and create a vacuum force that dislodges roofing systems. RestoreMaster roof repair offices in St. Cloud, MN, deliver commercial inspection services across Minnesota.
A local map of the tornado and high winds in St. Paul shows a large gray swath indicating intense activity. The storm stretches West to Minneapolis, north as far as Osceola Landing, into Wisconsin, and south across Inver Grove Heights.

The National Weather Service high wind, hail, and tornado damage map for Saturday, August 27th, shows a red concentration over the St. Paul area, scattered severe weather across Iowa, and isolated storms across the country. All told, five tornados, 31 high wind events, and two hailstorms were recorded within a 24-hour period. Wide-reaching reports highlighted the extreme property and roof damage inflicted in St. Paul and surrounding counties.
- Apple Valley: Tornado winds uprooted trees and flying debris caused property damage near Cedar Ave and 127th Street. A large tree landed on the roof of a mobile home.
- Burnsville: A twister drove 75 mph winds near Crystal Lake, leaving a wake of property and wind roof damage.
- Coon Rapids: Social media images indicate high winds cut through Anoka County strong enough to topple large trees.
- Eagan: A tornado touched down to the north of Thompson Ave near Highway 52, snapping mature trees in its path with winds that reached 85 mph.
- Falcon Heights: Events at the Minnesota State Fair were suspended as high winds put people in danger and flash flooding swamped the fairgrounds. Wind gusts topped 60 mph as fairgoers evacuated.
- Maplewood: Fallen trees blocked roads as residents waited for road crews to clear limbs.
- North Oaks: Intense wind gusts overturned a boat lift and large trees were snapped like twigs.
- Saint Paul: Hail the size of ping pong balls cracked shingles and damaged commercial roofing systems at approximately 9 pm. Straight line winds exceeded 61 mph with a tornado touching down just northeast of the downtown business district. Trees were reportedly uprooted and debris pelted building siding and gutters. The twister generated top-end wind speeds above 80 mph.
Commercial roof inspection services professionals routinely discover hidden damage even when a structure is outside a tornado's direct path. Unless a slow leaking roof is identified and fixed, rafters become weakened from water damage and hazardous molds grow behind walls. RestoreMaster sent commercial roof inspection specialists to Brainerd, MN, on June 23, 2022, to record damage and help property owners expedite the insurance claim process.
Some roofing systems can be severely harmed by damage from heavy winds, tornadoes, or hail.
Some older roofs can sustain damage from only 50 mph winds.
Several factors will determine the severity of roof damage: the height of the building and proximity to nearby structures, the quality of work by the original installers, the shape and angle of the roof, the age and type of roofing materials, and the impact from debris.
It’s important to get a thorough roof inspection & property damage assessment following severe weather like this so that you can determine whether you have roof damage from hail or high winds.
If roof leaks are a problem, they need to be addressed immediately. Experienced roofing contractors can either cover the affected area (or the entire roof) with a tarp or with a durable shrink wrap plastic membrane until long-term repairs can be made. Preventing water intrusion will help stop mold from growing.
If your property was anywhere within the storm damage map, it would be best to get your roof inspected, even if you think your roof was not damaged.
Some storm damage problems do not produce symptoms right away.
And insurance companies can require you to get a claim in before their deadline.
