From KWCH, severe thunderstorms, landspouts, heavy winds, and hail plagued the Topeka and Junction City areas of Kansas on Tuesday evening, May 17^th. A landspout sprung up in Decatur County. These are different from tornadoes, in that they are not connected to supercell thunderstorms. The airport in Russell recorded wind speeds up to 75 mph. Wind at this speed can down tree branches which can fall on buildings and homes, break power poles can cause power outages. In South Wichita, a resident’s tree in their front yard split in half just from the strong wind gusts.

About 4,500 customers remain without power in Sedgwick and Saline counties. In Salina, 2,963 customers lost power due to wind gusts of 58 mph. Clearwater utilities reported that more than 700 people were without power. A tornado was spotted, touching down briefly along I-70 west of Quinter and east of Grainfield. No damage occurred.
