The week started off with two large storms that blew through Minnesota on Monday, May 9. Fallen trees, sheared off branches, downed power lines, and debris mixed with hail and torrential rains to leave a huge swath of mayhem in the western area. This was the same storm that caused havoc in the St. Paul area.  In particular, according to Fox9, one couple had a tree fall on their house, while they were in their basement with their 5 dogs. The tree split their house in half. This was from straight-line winds, also known as derechos, which can be as damaging as tornadoes. Schools could not open due to power outages, and trees blocked roadways.  There were flash floods in roadways, and homes and commercial buildings were taking in water and even a very brief tornado. These storms started early Monday morning, moving east and northeast across the state, into mid-morning. According to a hail map of the area, large hail dropped from western Yellow Medicine to Pine and Chisago counties, Montevideo and Fergus Falls received hail up to 2 inches in diameter (dark orange), and areas further into the middle of the storm, such as Clarkfield, Boyd and Blomkest, received hail up to the size of tennis balls and baseball (purple). The outskirts of the large hail areas found hail up to about 1” – 1.25” (yellow).
