Emergency Roof Repair Underway After Tornadoes Rip Through Southeast Oklahoma on November 4, 2022

Commercial Roofing & Restoration

Disaster Response Team

Nov 5, 2022

Destructive tornadoes and fierce winds tore through Southeast Oklahoma on Friday, Nov. 4th, leaving a wake of roof wind damage. Emergency roof repair specialists were dispatched to the region to secure buildings, provide commercial roof inspection services for ailing property owners, and help fast-track insurance claims. Those impacted by the high winds are urged to call the RestoreMaster roof repair office in Ardmore, OK.

“A Quick Response Team (QRT) assessed the damage today of the tornado that tracked 58 miles from Red River County, TX to McCurtain County, OK on Nov. 4.  This tornado is now preliminarily upgraded from an EF-3 to an EF-4 with estimated max winds of 170 mph.” the National Weather Service in Norman, OK, reportedly tweeted.

High winds, flying debris, and roof hail damage are often obvious after catastrophic weather hits. But the vacuum force of high-level tornadoes pulls on everything around it, leaving roof wind damage unnoticed until leaks occur months later. That’s why RestoreMaster urges commercial building owners in Southeast OK to request a complimentary roof inspection to ensure your claim is honored.

A local map of the tornado activity in Southeast Oklahoma shows gray swaths where the devastating high wind events tore through unsuspecting communities. Gray sections show high-wind incidents and the black lines are where tornadoes touched down, cutting paths of destruction across Southeast Oklahoma.

The National Weather Service high wind, hailstorm, and tornado damage map for Friday, Nov. 4th, shows an intense storm cluster covering Northeast Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Southeast Oklahoma. Isolated storms are positioned over Missouri, Iowa, and Wisconsin. All told, there were 73 high wind incidents, 29 hailstorms, and 48 tornadoes recorded for the day. Local and national reports highlighted the devastation inflicted on Southeast Oklahoma.

  • Calera: An EF-1 plowed through areas of Bryan County, snapping trees and hurling debris at buildings. Several mobile homes were badly damaged and an 18-wheeler was overturned on US 75.
  • Gans: Winds exceeded 65 mph across Sequoyah County that snapped trees as heavy rain flooded roadways.
  • Heavener: The Le Flore County community was heavily impacted by high winds and tornado activity. Trees were uprooted and a twisted tore a 6.5-mile path that caused widespread roof wind damage.
  • Idabel: The McCurtain County community suffered among the worst property damage as an EF-4 destroyed residential and commercial buildings, downed power lines and yanked mature trees out by their roots.
  • Pickens: An EF-2 reportedly touched down, based on a survey of the property damage.
  • Preston: A barn was destroyed and high winds sent the lumber across a roadway in Okmulgee County.
  • Sawyer: A powerful twister trekked across the Texas line into Choctaw County. Complete building restoration will be required for numerous structures as tornado and high winds ravaged neighborhoods and business districts.
  • Spiro: High winds toppled trees and utility poles as roof shingles were torn.

Property owners sometimes believe they have been spared roof wind damage when a tornado misses their building. But high winds and the vacuum effect leave difficult-to-detect damage. That’s why a prompt commercial roof inspection is essential to identify and document the damage.

RestoreMaster conducted commercial roof inspections in Guymon, OK, to support insurance claims after hail and wind storms hit on June 7, 2022.

Tornadoes, hail, and even strong winds can cause severe wind damage to roofing systems.

Winds as low as 50 mph can cause some older roofs to be damaged.

The severity of roof damage depends on several factors including: type and age of roofing materials, presence of flying debris, roof shape and angle, building height and proximity to adjacent structures and the quality of original roof installation.

Getting a roof inspection & property damage assessment after severe weather like this is important for determining whether you need to address roof damage from hail or high winds.

In situations where you’ve got a leaking roof, experienced disaster roofing contractors can stop the leaks temporarily, by laying tarp or by using a durable shrink-wrap plastic membrane in the affected areas, or even over the entire roof. This will keep your building protected until permanent repairs can take place. This will help prevent mold infestation from water leaks.

Rather than believing your roof is not damaged, if your property is anywhere in the area of the storm damage map, then you will want to get your roof inspected.

Many storm damage symptoms are not always evident immediately.

And deadlines from insurance companies could hinder you from filing a claim later.
