Hey, this is Kody Doerschel with RestoreMaster. Today, we’re at the Edison Mall in Fort Myers, Florida, and we were called out to this job because of the damages from Hurricane Ian. So come on and let’s check it out.

So as you can see, the hurricane did some extreme damage to this property, and we were contacted by another contractor who needed help and expertise getting the roof water tight before the insurance company comes out.

So now I’m going to pass you off to the job superintendent, so he can go further in depth on our process, and show you exactly what’s going on on top of this roof.

Hey, it’s Kevin Snyder. I’m the superintendent on Edison Mall. We’re actually on JC Penney’s right now. There’s a lot of damage as you can see behind me. A lot of structural damage. High winds hit this area, tore this roof up. Gave us some punctures, tore off a whole roof including the metal decking. So let’s go show you what happened to this roof and how we can help.

All right, so this is the TPO roof that we had to do an emergency response on. We were one of the first contractors called, if not the first contractor called. So as you can see, all this white membrane is just a TPO temporary roof. All the decking was gone, so this is about 6,000 square feet of a hole. We actually had to pull all the material out because it was all trashed. It was all rusted out. Everything was affected, and actually damaged a couple million dollars worth of material downstairs as well. Merchandise.

So what we had to do is we came in immediately. We assessed the situation, contacted our crews, and were able to get decking materials out here. TPO out here and a lot of wood. So basically what we had to do is reinforce this roof, but we had to get this thing done in two and a half days.

So what we’re looking at right here again, is this TPO flat roof membrane. Basically what this is, it’s heat welded together, so it gives you a stronger seal. What they do is they take a heat gun, or a heat blower, and they put it underneath this and they roll it out. So basically there’s nothing that can get underneath this. What we do is we prod it, so we go along the seams. We check every single seam, if there’s any give or if there’s any puncture on it, we go back through and we heat weld it again with a heat welder. We make sure that this thing’s good to go before we sign off on it and leave the job site.

This membrane roof is really good protection against sun, water intrusion, et cetera. But when debris is thrown at 155 mile an hour, there’s not much you can really do. So what happens, I don’t know what type of debris this is, but it punctured all the way down into the installation, what’s called ISO. That means that there’s a direct way to your decking and every merchandise that’s underneath. What we do to help our crews find them, is we actually take these yard flags and actually put them out here in the hole, so that way we can find them across the roof. So that way it’s a lot easier for us to actually see it across this whole roof.
