Commercial Roofing & Restoration

Disaster Response Team

Aug 10, 2022

Emergency roof repair crews responded to a hailstorm that brought strong winds, lightning strikes, and torrential downpours to Eugene, OR, Tuesday, August 9th. The rare hailstorm left a wake of damage that threatens to cause substantial water damage unless contained. RestoreMaster has commercial roof inspection services teams in Eugene, OR, ready to secure buildings and begin the water removal process.

“Tuesday night brought powerful winds, thunder, and rain turning to hail in some parts of our listening area. Around 9:00 pm last night, Eugene-Springfield saw a series of brief but powerful storms. Medium to large hail fell in the South Hills and other parts of town, with a flood advisory issued for the north-central section of Lane County,” KLCC reported. “A red flag warning was in effect in the Eugene area until 6 am this morning. The heaviest rainfall came down east of Eugene and Albany, in the Willamette National Forest, and just west of Bend in the Deschutes National Forest.”

The drought-plagued region also saw more than 5,000 lightning strikes and upwards of 123 acres burned across Oregon. Heavy rains kept the fires from escalating, but the precipitation poses a danger to property owners affected by hail roof damage. Commercial, agricultural, industrial, and institutional building owners are urged to request a complimentary roof inspection.

A local hail damage map shows a storm front concentrated over the Greater Eugene area. The yellow sections on the outskirts of the hailstorm point to ice up to 1.25 inches making ground fall. The orange center of the storm indicates hail up to 2.5 inches in diameter pounded automobiles and rooftops.

The National Weather Service high wind and hailstorm damage map for Tuesday, August 9th, shows isolated severe weather events scattered across the country. National reporting highlights 69 high wind events and eight hailstorms during a 24-hour period. Traditional and social media reports demonstrate Eugene, OR, and neighboring counties suffered significant hail damage to roofing systems and other losses.

  • Eugene: Hailstones ranging from the size of quarters to ping pong balls pelted the area from 11:30 to 11:45 pm.
  • Fort Rock: Agricultural buildings in Lake County were toppled by strong wind gusts.
  • Three Rivers: High winds snapped branches, downed power lines, and caused storm roof damage across Deschutes County.

This marks the third time in the last three years that hail damage roof repairs have been needed within a 10-mile radius of Eugene. It’s imperative to schedule a commercial roof inspection to ensure seemingly minor hail roof damage doesn’t lead to weakened rafters and extensive building restoration later.

RestoreMaster deployed commercial roofing teams to fix roof hail damage in Spokane County, Washington, and North Idaho after a storm hit on August 11, 2022.

Severe storms, bringing hail, strong winds, or tornadoes can cause severe roof damage, by ripping off roofing systems.

Older roofs are susceptible to severe wind damage, by winds as low as 50 mph.

Roof damage can be severe or mild, depending on various factors which include: materials used on the roof, impact of debris, building height and proximity to other buildings, age, angle and shape of the roof and type of roofing.

It’s important to get a thorough roof inspection & property damage assessment following severe weather like this so that you can determine whether you have roof damage from hail or high winds.

Circumstances do not always allow for immediate repair of roof leaks. In the meantime, an experienced disaster roofing contractor can cover the roof or affected area with a tarp or with a durable plastic shrink wrap material, until such a time when more permanent repairs can be made. We need to stop more moisture damage, so we can prevent mold growth.

If your property was anywhere within the storm damage map, it would be best to get your roof inspected, even if you think your roof was not damaged.

Symptoms of storm damage problems do not always show up immediately.

And deadlines from insurance companies could hinder you from filing a claim later.
