Families across Southwest Kansas sheltered under tornado threat on Friday, April 22nd, 2022, but it was fierce hailstorms that inflicted widespread property damage. CBS News affiliate KCTV 5 reported that large hailstorm concentrations hovered around Finney County, particularly Garden City.

“One storm approaching Garden City packs a punch with winds of 70-plus mph. A storm south of town that could impact Garden City has the potential to dump large hail. Garden City police reported down power lines in the area, causing some power outages,” KCTV 5 reported.

At KSN News, severe weather coverage focused on Leoti in Wichita County. Residential and commercial building owners in the County Seat suffered among the worst hail damage to roofing systems. Large ice stones caused extensive destruction, and the media outlet spoke with a local Farm Bureau representative, urging property owners to promptly file insurance claims.

“Because, like the people with broken windows, they need to get their repairs immediately, and unfortunately, when something like this happens, and there is so much damage, every roof cannot be replaced within a week. So, we are here just to make sure our insurers our taken care of,” a Farm Bureau official reportedly said.

A local hail damage map indicates multiple storm fronts stretched across Southwest Kansas from the Oklahoma line south of Rolla to Leoti. The yellow bands on the severe weather map show hail as large as 1.25 inches pelting the entire Southwest. The color-coded storm map also highlights places such as Hugoton, Ulysses, and Garden City in orange, where ice up to 2.5 inches struck automobiles and buildings. And the patch of purple is where ice of more than 2.5 inches blanketed communities.
