Roofing & Restoration Contractors Needed After Canyon, Texas, Suffers Wind, Hail Damage Tuesday, May 10, 2022

May 11, 2022

The Texas Panhandle suffered another direct hit from high winds and hailstone storms Tuesday, May 10th, and Canyon property owners sustained devastating roof damage. RestoreMaster alerted available emergency repair contractors to secure every leaking roof with hail damage.

Texas Storm Chasers warned that severe storms would strike throughout Randall County, with southeastern portions of the Lone Star state spared the brunt of the massive weather event.

“A level 3 (out of 5) risk for severe storms encompasses the southeastern Texas Panhandle, the Caprock, West-Central Texas, into the western Big Country, and the eastern Permian Basin,” Texas Storm Chasers reported. “Scattered to numerous severe thunderstorms are expected this afternoon into this evening. This afternoon’s strongest storms could produce very large hail up to the size of tennis balls. Localized damaging wind gusts over 70 miles per hour are possible. Once storms grow upscale into clusters or line segments this evening, we could see a few hurricane-force wind gusts up to 80 miles per hour.”

A local hailstorm damage map supports that prediction as multiple hailstorms and high-wind events are shown concentrating on Canyon, the Randall County Seat. The hail damage to roofing systems can be extrapolated from the color-coded map. One yellow and orange hailstorm stretches I-27 from Happy, past Amarillo, and east of Bishop Hills. Smaller fronts peppered regions east of Highway 87, including Umbarger, Highway 385 near 1412 in Deaf Smith County, and a small storm dropped ice south of Bushland.

The Yellow sections indicate hailstones up to 1.25 inches pelting homes and businesses. Orange and dark orange concentrations above Canyon and Amarillo indicate ice stones up to 2.5 inches resulted in hail damage on roofs. Commercial roof repair may be necessary as structures near Happy State Bank Stadiums experienced massive ice stone dumps and wind gusts on Tuesday, May 10th, 2022.

The National Weather Service high wind and hailstorm damage map accounts for 77 extreme gust reports and 33 hailstone strikes over 24 hours. A large cluster of storms is shown across North Texas and into parts of Oklahoma. Wide-reaching reports designate the following communities that endured among the worst hail and roof wind damage.

  • Amarillo: Quarter-sized hail blanketed areas southwest of the city with ping pong ball-sized icefall to the northeast. Ice as large as a hen egg struck rooftops in the city limits and wind gusts snapped tree limbs.
  • Canyon: Hailstones as large as limes pounded the community, requiring hail damage roof repairs as the fast-moving storms trekked across the panhandle.
  • Clarendon: Ice stones as large as tennis balls struck automobiles and commercial buildings, requiring roof leak repair in the aftermath.
  • Goodnight: High winds peaked near 60 mph in areas of Armstrong County.
  • Hereford: Winds exceeded 60 mph across Deaf Smith County.
  • Pampa: Wind gusts as high as 81 mph ripped across Gray County, tearing out buildings apart and shingles from rooftops. A metal barn was reportedly a total loss.
  • Panhandle: Winds reached 66 mph, according to West Texas Mesonet reporting.
  • Tulia: Large trees were downed in the southern areas of the community.
  • White Deer: Ice up to 1.25 inches in diameter doused swaths of Carson County.
  • Vigo Park: High winds reached 67 mph, and nearby Happy experienced strong gusts for nearly one hour.

The Texas Panhandle continues to experience extreme weather patterns, and commercial building owners are urged to implement roof leak repair measures before heavy rains cause more damage. RestoreMaster went into action after hail and high winds wreaked property damage and destruction on Concordia, Kansas, on April 29, 2022.

Strong winds can rip open some roofing systems and cause severe roof wind damage.

Winds as low as 50 mph can cause some older roofs to be damaged.

The severity of roof damage depends on several factors including: type and age of roofing materials, presence of flying debris, roof shape and angle, building height and proximity to adjacent structures and the quality of original roof installation.

Getting a roof inspection & property damage assessment after severe weather like this is important for determining whether you need to address roof damage from hail or high winds.

In situations where you’ve got a leaking roof, experienced disaster roofing contractors can stop the leaks temporarily, by laying tarp or by using a durable shrink-wrap plastic membrane in the affected areas, or even over the entire roof. This will keep your building protected until permanent repairs can take place. This will help prevent mold infestation from water leaks.

Even if you don’t think your roof was damaged, you will want to get your roof inspected if your property falls anywhere within the hail damage map.

Some storm damage symptoms take time to appear.

And deadlines from insurance companies could hinder you from filing a claim later.
